Casting contest on August 7th, 2010 at

Fly Fishing Only in Fairfield.

Come one come all - entry fee $15.00
all proceeds go to the Maine TU Trout Camp.

Many people who can't be here to cast still enter to support the Trout Camp.  If you would like to make a Non-casting personal donation to support the Maine Trout Unlimited Trout Camp call us at (207) 453-6242 or click on this link to make an online donation - yep, that's right - you can donate online and each $15.00 entry donation you make will get your name entered into the drawing for an ORVIS Hydros rod - you get to pick the length and line weight.

We will host the annual TU Trout Camp Fly Casting Contest on Saturday, August 7th from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

New rules this year.  You can use your own rod instead of us supplying the rods.

If you pony up the entry fee and win you can pick your prize.  Yep, you can have your choice and pick any Helios rod you'd like to have.  (Spey and Switch rods excluded)

There are two things your entry fee will do one is to get you a chance to win one of the fine fly rods mentioned, the second is it will help sponsor the Maine Trout Unlimited - Trout Camp.

The first thing is a maybe but the second is a sure bet and a result of your entry fee, your generosity will be that kids from all over - sons and daughters of people like you - will get a chance to attend the camp.  Take a look at some of these pictures and think about what it would have meant to you as a teenager to have been able to attend something like this.

General outline of the contest rules:

All contestants will cast at targets in the casting pool set up in the lot next to the shop.
Targets will be floating rings located at 30', 35', 40' and 45'.
The entry fee gets you five casts at the first of several target rings – each cast that hits a target gets you five points.  Total possible points from each ring – 25. To get 25 points from a single target you must hit the target all five casts for 5 points per hit.
To cast at the second ring you MUST hit the first target at least once and to cast at the third ring you must hit the second ring at least once and so it goes on out to the final ring.  Miss all five tries at any target, including the first, and, well, it's the next person's turn.
Contestant with the highest final score wins an Orvis Helios fly rod of their choice so think about the rod you might win.

Judges decisions are final and if need be judges may create new rules
to address unforeseen events.

Do you want a Helios fly rod.  This might be the way to get it and helps a good cause at the same time. Come enter and who knows you might win. It’s all for a good cause even if you don't win you'll be helping to sponsor the Maine Trout Unlimited - Trout Camp.  It's like they say about the lottery - if you don't enter you can't win.

However, you don't have to enter to donate - you don't have to buy a ticket and cast - many last year chose to make a $15.00 donation and didn't have time to cast but they wanted to help a good cause.

If fact so many called last year to donate without actually entering the casting contest that we have created another winning category - the non-caster winner.  For every $15.00 donation made by a non-caster their name will be entered in a drawing for an Orvis Hydros fly rod of their choice.

Here are a few answers to some questions that people have called and asked about the casting contest.

Can I use my own rod?
New rules this year.  You can use your own rod instead of us supplying the rods.
So if anyone has thought they would like to enter but didn’t because they wanted to use their own rod and couldn’t – well – that has changed.  Bring your own rod and see if you can win another rod – the Helios of your choice.

Leaders of at least 7 1/2’ will be required and no rod heavier than a six-weight will be allowed.  Oh, no flies either – the judge will provide all participants with a small strike indicator to use for the terminal end of the leader.

Can I warm up or practice cast?
Yes, you have 10 minutes to use as you see fit. You may shoot at the targets and practice all you like. However, if you are still practicing when the buzzer sounds you are disqualified and would have to re-enter to participate.

Do we use real flies?
No, the judge will provide a small strike indicator to use instead of a fly.

Do I have to reel in after my practice casts?
No, you can say I’m ready with your yarn setting in the first target if you like.

How many false casts can I make?
All you want but you only have 10 minutes.

What happens if I miss a target?
You get five tries at a target. You make five casts at the first target and get five points for each time you hit it. To cast at the second target you have to have hit the first target at least once during the five tries. To cast at the third target you must hit the second one at least once.

How many targets are there?
Three. The first one is at 30', then 35' and the final target is at 40'.

What about a tie?
A tie will get you name in a hat and we will draw the winner.
